Piccolo Boy Magazine is a publisher of children's magazines with its focus on publishing high-quality content, imaginative graphics and design. Piccolo Boy was founded in 2011 by Daniel Armacost who had enjoyed reading magazines for children for his own consumption as a child.The choice to publish his own magazine was inspired by the need for this type of publication that meets both playtime and educational needs. The company's principal goal is to provide higher quality short stories, fun artwork, puzzles, games and activities that embody creativity through playtime while expanding PBS kids' knowledge across all subjects at school or home. The magazine also provides young children with an outlet to express themselves through the artwork that is featured in each issue.All content in Piccolo Boy Magazine is original content. It does not reprint any existing work from other sources, including books, magazines, newspapers, etc. The illustration work in Piccolo Boy Magazine is completely original and created by designers and artists in-house at the company. The illustrations are created with the intention of entertaining young children while developing their imagination which aids in development of their spatial reasoning skills. Each issue contains 20 original stories featuring protagonists between ages 0-6 years old. The stories are written by a team of writers between 17-38 years old. These stories are chosen from a pool of thousands of submissions from writers from across the globe. The magazine was developed after a year-long research phase. During this phase, Armacost surveyed parents and teachers about their needs and wants in a children's magazine. According to Armacost, he saw that children have more access to educational content today than ever before, but that "the problem is that educational material is being forced on them". The idea for the company came from the need to create a fun environment where young children could enjoy reading while also being exposed to new information and concepts. In the months leading up to the launch, Armacost developed a "story bank" of over 1,000 stories from writers. In addition to the story bank, he also hired a team of illustrators and writers that would later become staff members at Piccolo Boy Magazine.Piccolo Boy Magazine was officially launched in December 2011. As of January 2015, Piccolo Boy Magazine has a subscriber base across the U.S., Canada and Australia with readers in over 20 countries . The publisher also has an online presence through their website and social networks including Facebook and Twitter.The magazine is published 10 times a year. There are six issues of the magazine released per year. Each issue features original content of varying length and size. The magazine has a unique and playful design and layout that is reminiscent of children's books. The magazine comes in two sizes: a bigger one with colorful pages and illustrations on every page, and a smaller one that sells for $1 USD which is printed on black-and-white paper.
